Having over 11 years of counselling experience which includes working at a Toronto based Psychiatrists office, Lynton Friedman has seen a number of clients with varying degrees of Anxiety & Depression, ranging from mild feelings of being out of control to full blown panic attacks with physiological sensations. It is important to clarify that at Sanlyn Wellness, the practitioner is not a Psychologist nor a Psychiatrist and is therefore not allowed to diagnose disorders, prescribe medication or provide psychological assessments to clients. Sanlyn Wellness function is to use Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy and Energy based modalities such as Chakra Therapy to provide another avenue where clients can come and express how they feel in a safe environment and reduce their symptoms.

One of the biggest factors for the success and reduction of symptoms is that the person feels comfortable and is given the choice as to which type of therapy would be best suited to them. Lynton is effective in the initial session at educating and explaining all the different techniques and tools available for the Anxiety & Depression healing process. This gives a client-centred approach and usually allows the person sitting in the office to get a sense of control about how they are feeling.

"As this topic is broad in spectrum, it has been seen many times in sessions when clients are exhibiting anxious or depressive feelings, they think in their mind they are going to die. If one was to associate the anxiety of the death process, there would be a cessation of breathing. In order to calm clients down, breathing techniques are taught which in turn creates a form of positive control and allows the individual at the time to realize they are still alive."

Various ways of Hypnotherapy have also been highly effective in creating success in client recoveries. Scripting Hypnosis is a process where the therapist reads out scripts that deal with specific issues being presented. This form of therapy is pivotal in creating a space where the client can calm the conscious mind down, open the subconscious, take in the suggestions that can switch the negative Anxiety or Depressive thinking process into a positive one. It is here that the clients have learned what is called anchoring techniques. This has been a way to teach the clients a certain move or a position that can be used outside of the Centre when they have a process of feeling anxious in their life. The success of this technique is that it has effectively triggered clients back to feelings of calmness that they experienced in the Hypnosis chair during their sessions.

The second type of Hypnosis used to calm clients down requires a combination of Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy. This uses more regressive techniques which takes the client back to the first time they experienced these symptoms and feelings. Once it is discovered what the trigger is, then there is a process called reframing which changes the event in the repressed emotion and helps to heal the event that has been causing distress in the present time to the clients that was seeking the help. This process can take a bit of time, however once found it is usually a great help to bringing balance back in the clients perspective.

Energy based therapies such as Chakra Balancing are also excellent in reducing panic, anxiety and depressive feelings. The body is a store house of Anxiety triggers which also energetically repress emotions into physiological symptoms that can manifest as Psychosomatic experiences. Breathing techniques, coupled with Body Psychotherapy/Somatic Therapy are a great way to allow the body to bring itself back into equilibrium and therefore let go of the stored up emotional baggage that is bringing about the unbalanced feelings.

Phobias are elevated fears that often tend to be irrational, however for past clients of Lynton Friedman, these exacerbated thought processes tend to be real and often times debilitating. Fears and Phobias are much like a pebble being thrown into a river. Once the stone hits the water, it creates a rippling effect that projects itself in an outward motion. These thoughts which create the frightening reactions lead to Anxiety and higher than normal levels of stress.

"Lynton Friedman has worked with a number of different phobias at Sanlyn Wellness, some of which included; Flying, other forms of public transit, social phobia, public speaking and blushing. The key to the success of improving these clients was to first address the Anxiety and then move the pebble thoughts inwards as opposed to outwards. By focusing on reversing the thoughts, this helped to unfold the triggers, thus allowing the layers to be explored in more detail, allowing the unconscious patterning to brought into conscious awareness where it could be reframed or shifted."

With many of the other emotional issues that are addressed at Sanlyn Wellness, a combination of Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy were administered to get the best results in a short time frame. Since the brain does not know what is real or imagined when it comes to Phobias, the mind of the clients had to be retrained. Lynton Friedman used a number of techniques to allow this to occur. Using Hypnotherapy, there was some desensitization methods which were generally quick and highly effective from former client experiences. Some clients responded to this approach within the first and second session. Some clients however were more resistant as their element of control tended to be much stronger causing the repressed trauma to become more deeply embedded in the psyche. It is here that sometimes regressive Hypnotherapy was used to find the very first time that feeling took place and get that part of the mind to know it was ok at that age to feel this way, however as an adult it is not benefiting them anymore. This method has also shown to be much quicker at creating changes than traditional therapeutic methods.

Using traditional methods such as Psychotherapy to gain information that was important for suggestions in Hypnosis is vital. This has proven to be successful in reducing panic and anxiety feelings in clients who were afraid to make changes or step into arenas that reinforce their phobias. Breathing techniques were taught to bring calmness to the mind while the clients were in conscious states of awareness. By teaching breathing, there was a definite degree of positive control brought back into the clients perspective. Lynton Friedman has noticed dramatic client improvements using this process.

Sanlyn Wellness has seen clients who require travel for work successfully get on an airplane and make the flight with little to no emotional stress. Lynton has seen clients who had physiological symptoms disappear when they got up in front of an audience to do public speaking. The above modalities were instrumental in creating the shifts. Many clients entered the Centre feeling that their lives were falling apart to find that when they were done, there was hope and optimism as they challenged their fears and phobias with courage. It is so rewarding to see clients changes from the beginning to the end of the therapy process.

Phobias encompass an elevated fear level around a single object, a certain situation or a specific place and the desire to avoid it at all costs. Examples include; public transportation, claustrophobia (closed spaces), public speaking and rats.

Phobias are fear based and largely associated with Anxiety. When a person thinks with fear, even though they are not actually in a real phobic situation, many bodily situations may occur. The person may develop sweaty palms, nausea, an increased heart beat and feelings of not being able to breathe. Along with physical reactions, there are psychological components too. The feeling of losing control is huge and the idea of having others see them in that situation is embarrassing and ultimately debilitating.

The job of the trained therapist who deals with client phobias is to find the root cause of the fear which can either be something that happened during their early years of life or an unfortunate traumatic event later in life that could trigger feelings of losing control. The key role of the therapist is to make the client comfortable and guide them to understand that the phobia, although real to them is in fact imagined and a reaction to an event or feeling. This is done without making them feel that they are being judged about their situation.

Hypnosis and Psychotherapy are used to source information regarding the triggers and phobic behaviours. One technique used to overcome the phobia is Systematic Desensitization. This is a process in which the client creates a step by step process through the phobia and goes from the least scary step to the most extreme step. The exercise is done by beginning with relaxation. Once relaxation is reached, each step is tackled to overcome the extreme fear. If the client is not able to make it past a certain step, relaxation is implored to calm them down and once they are more relaxed, the second attempt is taken to get them past that particular step or block.

"This is a highly effective technique and as the author of this article who had an extreme phobia to rats, I can attest to the success of this method as it helped me overcome avoiding rooms and places for days where rodents were spotted. Today I am able to cross paths with rats and not freeze up in my tracks."

The next technique that also works is using Guided Imagery through Hypnosis to take you either to the childhood event or triggering point that brought about the elevated fear and ultimately the phobia. This technique takes more patience and perseverance and requires you to speak while in the relaxed state of altered awareness. Both of the above processes are excellent at changing the beliefs that have been created.
