The weight loss market is a multibillion dollar industry. As consumers walking into a supermarket, there is a bombardment of diet products to contribute to the quest of reducing weight. Television, the internet and popular culture magazines have portrayed actors and actresses as perfect individuals with porcelain doll style bodies. This has put an immense amount of pressure onto society as a whole to be skinny, leading to many clients coming to see Lynton Friedman of Sanlyn Wellness over the years with issues such as; Emotional eating, body image distortions, negative self esteem, perfectionism and health situations such as diabetes and high cholesterol.

Lynton Friedman is not a medical doctor and when clients choose Sanlyn Wellness to lose weight, the two therapies incorporated to reach their goals are Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy. It is recommended that depending on the amount of weight loss and health concerns, that they check in with their doctor during the process.

"Lynton Friedman of Sanlyn Wellness has had a high success rate of clients shedding pounds and feeling better about themselves. It has been discovered with many years of counselling that individuals were focused on instantaneous gratification and have had to dispel this myth to them when it comes to shedding down the weight. Depending on how much weight is required to be taken off, the weight loss program can range from 6-15 sessions. Some clients have enjoyed the way therapies have been administered and stayed longer working on other issues that are beyond the realm of weight loss."

The important factor to remember that has created success with our clients was that weight had to be systematically reduced. Usually 1.5-2.5 lbs were suggested through hypnotic suggestions to be lost on a weekly basis until the weight loss goal number had been reached. The client was made aware that the ultimate goal was the reduction of weight, however the process could be lengthy and in order not to get despondent, Lynton Friedman found that by allowing the clients to see small changes such as a pair of jeans becoming looser or a lessening of the impulse for a certain type of food, that the process was on track and the realistic goals were within reach.

Hypnotherapy was reinforced over a number of weeks with various different suggestions implemented into the subconscious mind, so as to change the habits that had been formed over many years. Lynton has been well trained in inquiry and figuring out trigger points which contributed to the overall goal of losing weight. Weight loss is multi faceted and underlying emotional factors such as perfectionism and self esteem play a huge role in negative processing. Hypnotherapeutic suggestions were also used in conjunction with the goal setting numbers to produce a double whammy effect on the subconscious mind.

Psychotherapy has also highly effective in learning about the personalities of the clients that have come to see Lynton Friedman of Sanlyn Wellness. Emotional eating was prevalent in many individuals that were taken through inquiry in the initial sessions. Using talk therapy Lynton was able to see that with some clients that there was a correlations when they were lacking sweet interpersonal relationships, sugar became their substitute sweetness and when they were feeling bitter about life they chose to find salty potato chips as compensation. Using this information, suggestions were incorporated into scripts to shift this processing. Lynton Friedman is also able to do regressive Hypnotherapy and zoom into the first time they felt these feelings and change the mindset to a more positive outlook. This has tended to reduce the level or desire for the food and certain flavour that is being craved.

Sanlyn Wellness has had tremendous success dealing with a variety of issues related to self esteem and its branches of self worth, self confidence and self efficacy. The constant variable that collectively deals with all of these above categories is the concept of positive reinforcement.

By changing the mindset and the way the clients see themselves is fundamental to a new belief system within the core of their being. Lynton Friedman of Sanlyn Wellness has used a mind, body and spiritual approach to his therapy success with clients. Spiritually the concept of manifestation and affirmations has been applied to allow the clients to learn a new way of approaching how energetically through thought, there is vibration. From this approach, what is in tented into the universe is picked up and put back into their energetic space. Different techniques such as once a day affirmations are taught to clients. This approach with guidance of past client improvements helps Lynton choose for the clients the appropriate time and place during the day to allow the positive reinforcement flow of letting go affirmations work into the awareness of their psyche, which in turn gets channeled into the universal consciousness and changes iceberg core beliefs.

Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy are intertwined together when dealing with the self esteem arena. From past client experiences with different ethnic backgrounds and age groups, there has been found to be a correlation that most of the issues of self esteem, self confidence, self worth and self efficacy came into awareness at an early age. Using Psychotherapy, various talking techniques are used to assess where the clients level of esteem, confidence and worth are. This is usually addressed with a series of questions and mini exercises in the Centre during the sessions. Education of all the branches is also given in order for the client to understand whether their perception and cognition of a certain area is distorted.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool when dealing with self esteem. Hypnosis shuts down most of the critical conscious thinking and the constant anxiety forming mind banter that as individuals we tend to have on a daily basis. Sanlyn Wellness has many different scripts to change beliefs and create a higher degree of positive reinforcement. Scripts that have been used in the past dealt with issues related to blushing, performance anxiety, promiscuity and feelings of neediness within relationships to name a few. Each client that Lynton Friedman has seen over the many years in practice is individual and unique. Although correlations form, the job of the Sanlyn Wellness practitioner has been to come up with specific scripts that are catered to each client’s needs within those sessions.

"Many of the issues started in childhood, therefore the concept of Inner Child work within the Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy modules to change beliefs have effectively been used with strong success rates. These forms of therapy have been about connecting to this energy and making friends with it in order to build trust and faith again. All these techniques when collectively used have been beneficial in seeing many changes in our clients over the years."

To put this into perspective, let us use an example of a client that came in to the Centre a few years ago. To keep with confidentiality, the gender and age has been left out and details are minimal. The client had issues with self esteem in social settings and relationships. After much inquiry and deep unfolding of the issues using talk therapy, Hypnosis was used with positive effects. A combination of ego strengthening techniques were imprinted into the subconscious and the inner child was taught to trust again with positive results. The client got into a relationship and is much better in social settings.

I have nobody. I need some someone 🙁 My name is Amanda Todd.

The final two written black and white cards of a fifteen year old British Columbia teenager shortly before she took her own life. , Sanlyn Wellness wishes to express condolences to her family and pray that her soul transitions peacefully. This young lady brought to the forefront through her ten minute YouTube video a chilling reminder that bullying is not an isolated incident and more prevalent than we as society ever imagined it to be.

As the author of this article, the owner and counselor/therapist of Sanlyn Wellness Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, it has been my job over a number of years to help many different individuals from all walks of life to learn and cope with traumatic experiences and relationship issues. One such area that has been quite a focal point with clients is bullying at one time or another in their lives. The effects of watching an adult reliving this verbal, emotional or online abuse in my office is heart wrenching.

I have also been the victim of torment and being bullied when I was the same age as Amanda. My experience was nowhere close to what this young female endured, however one episode I remember was painful and definitely left a scar in my psyche. I had just moved to Canada from South Africa and I was dealing with the stress of immigration and wanting to somehow fit into a society and culture that was foreign to me. I was placed into high school almost two months into the semester. Most of my peers had integrated and formed cliques of friends. To compound this I was teased for my accent which I believe to this day is wonderful. I was made fun of because I wore South African clothing that was a different style. My story that I am going to share happened in an English class.

"I remember crying and just feeling like I hated Canada, felt low and wondered why people could be so cruel."

The teacher was writing on the blackboard and had her back to the classroom. I remember some popular cool kids in the class turning to me and in a very quiet voice saying stand up and go to the clock on the wall and move it forward fifteen minutes so we can get out of class early. Having very few solid good friends at this time, I just wanted to fit in, so I got up and began to change the clock. As I was in the process of doing that the very same kids started yelling out to the teacher to look. I froze in my footsteps, embarrassment, fear, anger, sadness and isolation ran through my mind. I was made to explain myself after the class and did not get into trouble because of my situation of being new to the school. I remember crying and just feeling like I hated Canada, felt low and wondered why people could be so cruel.

Bullying causes a number of reactions as you can see from mine and Amanda’s story. Wanting to be alone, low self esteem, addictions, panic attacks, headaches, stomach pains, depression, insomnia and anger are some of the more common effects of continuous or isolated bullying, whether it is verbal, physical, social or online. I too, like Amanda experienced a slew of feelings both physical and emotional. What helped guide me through the stress and incidents at that time was a constant reminder to myself that I was not going to allow the power to be given over to teenagers that were just as insecure as me at the time. I worked really hard at finding people that honoured me for who I was and that had similar interests and made some very close friends that I still to this day have.

Unfortunately Amanda’s pain was too much, her anguish to hard to swallow. This article is written in her memory to a teenage girl I never met, yet shared a common bond. Each and every time I work with bullying in my practice going forward, Amanda your story is going to be told. If you have been bullied, call or email Sanlyn Wellness and we can help.

Have you ever experienced a situation where you stare down at the ground because you are ashamed of how you look? Have you ever been in a social setting and felt that you have nothing to say because you do not feel good enough? Have you ever been given a compliment only to mimimize it because you feel insecure about yourself? If these statements resonate with you, Sanlyn Wellness has some guidance techniques to help you build up your self esteem and confidence levels.

1. Focus on your strengths

From an early age many of my clients were taught by perhaps well meaning individuals around them that they were not pretty enough, that they were to fat or socially awkward. This over time created a situation where their brain was in a constant on switch mode of negative spiral thinking. This in turn created a belief system of low self esteem.

This technique requires you to look at one or two things that you are good at in your life. Everyone has some spark of creativity and therefore it’s essential to go into yourself and find that gift that you have and focus your energy on bringing it out. Often giving yourself a pat on your shoulders or thumbs up is a good way to reinforce that your mind is shifting the negative to a positive and ultimately turning the on switch to off mode.

2. Accept compliments and turn them into affirmations

One of the greatest downfalls of having a lack of self esteem is the desire to minimize compliments at all costs. The technique that is going to be used here for this issue is rather simple and actually quite easy. When given a compliment instead of going into thinking mode and defensive posturing, simply say THANK YOU.

Following that, then take the compliment that was given and turn it into an affirmation that can be said up to 25 times a day. An affirmation of a compliment can be a statement such as, “I have beautiful eyes that radiate kindness and beauty”. This technique focuses your energetic thoughts onto you rather than someone else.

3. Create boundaries and get rid of negative people in your life

Often individuals who have self esteem issues tend to connect with people that bully and control them. This in turn gives the other person power over them and increases the likelihood of allowing the self esteem to spiral into a tail spin of negative emotions. Boundaries are ways that you take control of your life and implement who can enter into your personal space.

This technique allows you to empower yourself. This in essence allows you to get rid of the feeling that you are not good enough through the bullying and generally abusive situations that you may find yourself entering into with people that are close to you or you have grown up with. The key is to focus on this positive action and be around people that make you feel good, that are uplifting and supportive of you.

This article is a small snapshot of a few techniques that are used at Sanlyn to improve clients self esteem issues. Contact the Centre by email of call to find out more of how we can get you to an empowered state of positive self esteem.
