Addictions have many faces. There is activity addiction which includes things such as; Pornography, gaming and excessive exercising, while there is ingestive addictions such as; Alcohol, drugs and food. Lynton Friedman of Sanlyn Wellness is not a medical doctor. The function of the Centre is not to deal directly with the physiological withdrawals of addiction, however to be an adjunct support network to helping clients see the issues and path that have taken them to the space of becoming addicted to a substance or activity.

One of the ways Lynton has had success in the past is getting the client to see that often there is secrecy and enabling behaviour that goes into the addictive process. Not every addiction has an enabler, that being a person who encourages the behaviour, however more so from our experience there seems to be one. Lynton Friedman is not a Clinical Medical Addiction Specialists, however he has been trained in addictions theory. Sanlyn Wellness uses Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy techniques which are excellent in finding triggers and reducing the impulses.

When clients have addictions, the underlying consistent factor across most client cases has been the numbing out effect of a situation or memory in their life. Much of Sanlyn Wellness successes has come with intensive peeling away of layers of emotions to find the root cause which ultimately creates the effect, being the behaviour. Psychotherapy is excellent to do this. There have to be very good listening skills on the part of the therapist to catch the cues to look for and ultimately shift the behaviour. Once these cues are in the forefront, Hypnotherapy can be used to reduce the impulse and reframe the situations being presented through the Psychotherapeutic process.

"Hypnotherapy is fundamental in creating visualizations that are long lasting and associated to reducing the desire for the activity or substance. One success story was a client who needed to stay clean from a hard drug for the critical 7 month relapse period. After a few sessions which mixed the above two techniques together, a visualization of a superhero who had the ability much like Spiderman to shoot webs out of his hands causing him to stick to the wall was placed into the subconscious. This particular suggestion was the one that kept this individual from seeking drugs and allowing him to clean up his life and move into a better space. "

Lynton Friedman has created a relaxed space in Sanlyn Wellness to allow the clients to feel safe and secure. The empathic and calming approach to his work creates a space of trust and a letting go of negative control by the clients. This is core to healing and stopping Addictions. Sanlyn Wellness does not claim to completely guarantee an elimination of the behaviour, however there has been high success rates in reducing cravings and support structures to allow the clients to focus their energies into more positively channeled areas of their lives.

If you are looking to overcome an Addiction and are intrigued by how Hypnotherapy can benefit you, call or email Sanlyn Wellness and Lynton will be more than glad to answer your questions for you.

I am certain that everyone reading this article has at one time or another has had an incident of anger, whether it was a screaming match with a partner, an argument with a customer service representative, throwing something in a rage or giving someone the middle finger while driving on a busy highway. It is important to understand that these behaviours are a reaction to an incident and are a result of some deep rooted pain that has been suppressed in the psyche.

When these above situations occur, the behavioural response is overridden by the longer term shame that is associated with these incidents. The key point to focus on is that anger by itself is not the issue, the dilemma is how to deal with it. This article is primarily going to focus on the negative connotations of anger and a couple of techniques to help deal with them. However we must remember that anger can sometimes push us forward in constructive ways. One such example could be a battered wife who uses the fuel of her emotional anger to finally leave the relationship and find what she deserves out of life. Anger is an emotion that is multi-layered with defence mechanisms that came in to protect us at an early age from hurt and other forms of emotional pain. Distortion of control is seen when someone is angry or in a rage. As much as we attempt to think or feel we are in control of the situation, an adult who is raging is merely a five year old having a temper tantrum because they could not get what they wanted.

"A well trained counselor, such as Lynton Friedman can help you unfold those layers of defences and identify with you the sadness that is creating so much pain in your life, which is adversely affecting your relationships and your overall sense of self esteem/worth."

Below are two techniques which can benefit you during anger periods:

1. Technique One

The first one is the Time Out Technique that professional sports teams use to strategize their next move in a game. It is excellent because it gives a breathing space from the engagement and allows for a cooler calmer mind to prevail. It also takes away the arena of the battle and if there is only one team that engages, they will ultimately be having an argument or playing a game with themselves.

2. Technique Two

The second technique is to keep a Journal of how you react to anger and notice the thoughts, feelings and emotions through the Symantec language that you use. An example of this would be someone who has a healthy sense of themselves would say; “I failed this time and from this mistake I will grow”. An unhealthy angry response would be; “I am useless and nobody will love me because I can never succeed”. The importance of recognizing how we respond to these situations is how we can effectively change the dynamics and decrease feelings of sadness and pain.

It is very important to understand that this process is most effective when there is a higher degree of willingness by the person to allow it to happen. Furthermore when someone is in Therapeutic Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy THEY ARE IN CONTROL. They are not in a state of unconsciousness and infact they may have more awareness of the sensory input around them during the scripting and suggestion phases of the sessions. Clients are NOT CATATONIC, they can speak, hear, cough, scratch and even open their eyes during a Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy session.

If you or someone you know are angry and would like to learn more anger management techniques and exercises, Sanlyn Wellness can guide you. Call or book an appointment today.

Have you ever experienced a situation where you stare down at the ground because you are ashamed of how you look? Have you ever been in a social setting and felt that you have nothing to say because you do not feel good enough? Have you ever been given a compliment only to mimimize it because you feel insecure about yourself? If these statements resonate with you, Sanlyn Wellness has some guidance techniques to help you build up your self esteem and confidence levels.

1. Focus on your strengths

From an early age many of my clients were taught by perhaps well meaning individuals around them that they were not pretty enough, that they were to fat or socially awkward. This over time created a situation where their brain was in a constant on switch mode of negative spiral thinking. This in turn created a belief system of low self esteem.

This technique requires you to look at one or two things that you are good at in your life. Everyone has some spark of creativity and therefore it’s essential to go into yourself and find that gift that you have and focus your energy on bringing it out. Often giving yourself a pat on your shoulders or thumbs up is a good way to reinforce that your mind is shifting the negative to a positive and ultimately turning the on switch to off mode.

2. Accept compliments and turn them into affirmations

One of the greatest downfalls of having a lack of self esteem is the desire to minimize compliments at all costs. The technique that is going to be used here for this issue is rather simple and actually quite easy. When given a compliment instead of going into thinking mode and defensive posturing, simply say THANK YOU.

Following that, then take the compliment that was given and turn it into an affirmation that can be said up to 25 times a day. An affirmation of a compliment can be a statement such as, “I have beautiful eyes that radiate kindness and beauty”. This technique focuses your energetic thoughts onto you rather than someone else.

3. Create boundaries and get rid of negative people in your life

Often individuals who have self esteem issues tend to connect with people that bully and control them. This in turn gives the other person power over them and increases the likelihood of allowing the self esteem to spiral into a tail spin of negative emotions. Boundaries are ways that you take control of your life and implement who can enter into your personal space.

This technique allows you to empower yourself. This in essence allows you to get rid of the feeling that you are not good enough through the bullying and generally abusive situations that you may find yourself entering into with people that are close to you or you have grown up with. The key is to focus on this positive action and be around people that make you feel good, that are uplifting and supportive of you.

This article is a small snapshot of a few techniques that are used at Sanlyn to improve clients self esteem issues. Contact the Centre by email of call to find out more of how we can get you to an empowered state of positive self esteem.

I am going to begin the article by providing a disclaimer that I am neither a Medical Doctor nor a Nutritionist. I am a Registered Psychotherapist and Board Certified Hypnotherapist. The information I am going to be giving you in regards to tips on losing weight is not medical advice nor nutritional counseling. If you are serious about a weight loss program, it is important to be using one of the above professionals in conjunction with Sanlyn Wellness.

There are a number of great techniques and tips at Sanlyn to help you get into the right frame of mind to begin the quest to have that ideal healthy body. They are as follows;

Affirmations are a powerful way to help the mind manifest the desired body size and shape. Affirmations were popularized by the book “The Secret” which spoke about sending out an intention into the universe and allowing that to build itself into what was verbalized or visualized. The key to this technique is to stand in front of a mirror twice a day, in the morning and at night and come up with 3 different affirmations. The next step is to do them for 3 weeks and say each one up to 10 times with conviction, while looking at yourself in the mirror. An example of an affirmation could be “I am delighted with my new found curves that make me look slimmer”.

Exercise – The key with this tip is that the exercise should be done in conjunction to the weight loss program that incorporates Hypnotherapy. Experience with clients has shown that exercise should not be forced and used with the specific purpose of losing weight or the pressure that gets placed on the individual with this mindset creates a barrier to motivation and resentment may creep in if the weight is not lost quick enough. The exercise should be more fun based.

The best exercise that you can do on your own without going to a gym and can be implemented into your daily life is using stairs in a building as opposed to the elevator. Another tip is when you are walking to contract your stomach muscles. This creates leaner muscles and over a period of time changes can be seen. These techniques are automatic and it is a matter of adjusting your daily routines slightly.

Rapid Dieting is the worst possible thing to do when attempting to lose weight. A healthy weight loss in a month is around 8-11lbs. Crash diets could lead to a yo-yo effect of actually increasing your weight levels to more than what they were before you began a dieting process and this in turn could create major self esteem issues in respect of body image and failure thoughts. Focus on a goal that is reasonable and attainable to you.

These are just a few tips and techniques that Sanlyn Wellness uses with weight loss clients. Using both Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy I can help you shed those unwanted lbs or kgs. Call or email today for a session where we can incorporate even more tools to help you look and feel the way you always desired to be.

Phobias encompass an elevated fear level around a single object, a certain situation or a specific place and the desire to avoid it at all costs. Examples include; public transportation, claustrophobia (closed spaces), public speaking and rats.

Phobias are fear based and largely associated with Anxiety. When a person thinks with fear, even though they are not actually in a real phobic situation, many bodily situations may occur. The person may develop sweaty palms, nausea, an increased heart beat and feelings of not being able to breathe. Along with physical reactions, there are psychological components too. The feeling of losing control is huge and the idea of having others see them in that situation is embarrassing and ultimately debilitating.

The job of the trained therapist who deals with client phobias is to find the root cause of the fear which can either be something that happened during their early years of life or an unfortunate traumatic event later in life that could trigger feelings of losing control. The key role of the therapist is to make the client comfortable and guide them to understand that the phobia, although real to them is in fact imagined and a reaction to an event or feeling. This is done without making them feel that they are being judged about their situation.

Hypnosis and Psychotherapy are used to source information regarding the triggers and phobic behaviours. One technique used to overcome the phobia is Systematic Desensitization. This is a process in which the client creates a step by step process through the phobia and goes from the least scary step to the most extreme step. The exercise is done by beginning with relaxation. Once relaxation is reached, each step is tackled to overcome the extreme fear. If the client is not able to make it past a certain step, relaxation is implored to calm them down and once they are more relaxed, the second attempt is taken to get them past that particular step or block.

"This is a highly effective technique and as the author of this article who had an extreme phobia to rats, I can attest to the success of this method as it helped me overcome avoiding rooms and places for days where rodents were spotted. Today I am able to cross paths with rats and not freeze up in my tracks."

The next technique that also works is using Guided Imagery through Hypnosis to take you either to the childhood event or triggering point that brought about the elevated fear and ultimately the phobia. This technique takes more patience and perseverance and requires you to speak while in the relaxed state of altered awareness. Both of the above processes are excellent at changing the beliefs that have been created.

Sanlyn Wellness has many years of experience working with Phobias and underlying Anxiety issues. If you are looking to set yourself free, Call or email today to book an appointment. It is worth the investment.

As one year ends and a new year nips at its heels. There is no better time to throw out the old and bring in the new. What a wonderful feeling it would be to have 2012 begin with a resolution to be a non-smoker. This article will identify a few tips and give rationale to the quit smoking process.

The first and foremost reason to quit smoking is the health effects. The best way to approach this is to project yourself into the future and visualize what you would look and feel like if you continued the smoking habit. Create some shock stimulus such as; brown teeth, breathing difficulties, wrinkled skin, no energy and smelliness from the stale smoke in your clothing and hair. People are afraid of getting older and smoking has been shown to increase the potential for premature aging and breathing related health issues.

Money is another big factor. Take a scenario of a person who smokes 25 cigarettes a day at $10.00 per package. That works out to $70.00 weekly, $280.00 monthly, $3360.00 a year and over 10 years it comes to $33,600.00

"Take a $10.00 bill, flush it down the toilet and see how fast it vanishes. Step back, take a breath and then imagine that money you flushing away on a bad habit, instead being used for a down payment on a property, R.R.S.P. investments or even a dream vacation. The extra cash could also release you of any financial stress you may be feeling."

Quitting smoking can be extremely challenging. Hypnosis is a highly effective technique to change the belief system. This would be the first step to the stop smoking habit. Adjunct to Hypnosis, an excellent idea is to find a supportive companion whether it is a life partner, work colleague or friend to help you through the frustration. This person may want to quit smoking themselves at the same time or be someone that has positive energy to send you when the going gets tough.

Cigarette smoking can be ritualistic. Often time’s smokers say they get a high from taking out a smoke, touching it and lighting it up. This is the ritual behaviour. If one is to consider a habit as ritualistic then the best tip to be offered is to find something else to touch that does not create health issues such as picking up a glass and drinking a sip of water as an alternative or getting a straw to hold in order to mimic the shape of the cigarette.

We often complain that there is not enough time in the day to balance our work, family and social responsibilities. Imagine the time wasted in a day on a pack of cigarettes at 5 minutes a smoke. That is just over 2 hours a day that could be used for other activities such as; gym, homework or communication time. This would greatly reduce your time management stress.

The last tip is to figure out a time frame as the final day of your smoking and stick to it. Use your integrity and follow through with it. Sanlyn Wellness has had extensive experience using Hypnosis and Psychotherapy to aid in the elimination of the smoking habit for good.

Technological advancements and the accessibility of portable devices such as iPads, iPhones, Android tablets and Blackberries are making many people feel that they are in the midst of a destructive hurricane. This whirlwind of real time information is overwhelming and people are being pulled in different directions, creating a constant feeling of needing to balance family, personal and work life.

Some of the most used phrases by clients at Sanlyn Wellness Centre include: “I am so stressed out”, “Stress is making me lose control”, “I am anxious from stress”, “There is not enough time in the day and it’s stressing me out” and “Stress is killing me”. I’m sure many of you can relate to at least one of those statements.

"The key to working with stress reduction techniques is to become aware that instead of being in a 24 hour cycle of despair, there are simple, fast and effective exercises to create a positive spin on the whirlwind in as little as two minutes."

Stress creates an ever-increasing cycle of negative thought processing that ultimately leads to pessimism. The key to working with stress reduction techniques is to become aware that instead of being in a 24 hour cycle of despair, there are simple, fast and effective exercises to create a positive spin on the whirlwind in as little as two minutes. It is clear that if stress reduction techniques are not implemented into one’s daily routine, the mind, body and spirit will be out of equilibrium.

The most compelling stress reduction technique is to use breath. This process involves you taking charge of yourself. Stress causes us to feel that we are out of control. Breath is the vessel of life, and without breathing we would suffocate. Take two minutes when you feel that initial feeling of being overpowered and do 20 slow repetitive breaths in and out, exhaling gently and focusing on how your body is responding. This stress reduction technique ultimately allows you to break the constant mind chatter that is critical and negative in nature. This can be done up to 10 times a day. The benefits of taking 20 minutes out of a 24-hour day is immense and does not even take up one per cent of your time. The stress reduction technique will help to improve your clarity and allow better time management skills, reducing the levels of stress resilience.

The second highly effective stress reduction technique is to envision your mind as a beanbag, with the beans representing the thousands of thoughts that run through your brain. If the beanbag was being shaken and the beans were colliding, it would cause chaos. The main focus of this stress reduction technique is to create a solution by envisioning that you have a pair of scissors with which to cut open the material of the beanbag, releasing a bunch of beans and in the process relieving a huge amount of tension stored in your overall being.

The above examples are two of a number of different stress reduction techniques that are implored at Sanlyn Wellness. The Centre has been highly successful in helping clients reduce stress, decrease anxiety and create a feeling of balance, growth and advancement.
