Stress Reduction Techniques

01 Jan Stress Reduction Techniques

Technological advancements and the accessibility of portable devices such as iPads, iPhones, Android tablets and Blackberries are making many people feel that they are in the midst of a destructive hurricane. This whirlwind of real time information is overwhelming and people are being pulled in different directions, creating a constant feeling of needing to balance family, personal and work life.

Some of the most used phrases by clients at Sanlyn Wellness Centre include: “I am so stressed out”, “Stress is making me lose control”, “I am anxious from stress”, “There is not enough time in the day and it’s stressing me out” and “Stress is killing me”. I’m sure many of you can relate to at least one of those statements.

"The key to working with stress reduction techniques is to become aware that instead of being in a 24 hour cycle of despair, there are simple, fast and effective exercises to create a positive spin on the whirlwind in as little as two minutes."

Stress creates an ever-increasing cycle of negative thought processing that ultimately leads to pessimism. The key to working with stress reduction techniques is to become aware that instead of being in a 24 hour cycle of despair, there are simple, fast and effective exercises to create a positive spin on the whirlwind in as little as two minutes. It is clear that if stress reduction techniques are not implemented into one’s daily routine, the mind, body and spirit will be out of equilibrium.

The most compelling stress reduction technique is to use breath. This process involves you taking charge of yourself. Stress causes us to feel that we are out of control. Breath is the vessel of life, and without breathing we would suffocate. Take two minutes when you feel that initial feeling of being overpowered and do 20 slow repetitive breaths in and out, exhaling gently and focusing on how your body is responding. This stress reduction technique ultimately allows you to break the constant mind chatter that is critical and negative in nature. This can be done up to 10 times a day. The benefits of taking 20 minutes out of a 24-hour day is immense and does not even take up one per cent of your time. The stress reduction technique will help to improve your clarity and allow better time management skills, reducing the levels of stress resilience.

The second highly effective stress reduction technique is to envision your mind as a beanbag, with the beans representing the thousands of thoughts that run through your brain. If the beanbag was being shaken and the beans were colliding, it would cause chaos. The main focus of this stress reduction technique is to create a solution by envisioning that you have a pair of scissors with which to cut open the material of the beanbag, releasing a bunch of beans and in the process relieving a huge amount of tension stored in your overall being.

The above examples are two of a number of different stress reduction techniques that are implored at Sanlyn Wellness. The Centre has been highly successful in helping clients reduce stress, decrease anxiety and create a feeling of balance, growth and advancement.
